Rumors of God by Darren Whitehead and Jon Tyson: A Review

The title of this book, Rumors of God, caught my attention as soon as I saw it on the list.  Whitehead and Tyson are friends, both pastors, yet in quite different contexts.  They ask questions that most earnest Christians struggle with at one time or another.  Questions like, ‘why
don’t we see God doing the things today that are talked about in the Bible?’  The epigraph of chapter one is a prayer taken from the
prophet Habakkuk: “Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord.  Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.”  In other words, “God, where are you, and why aren’t you doing anything?”  This serves as a good jumping-off point for the book.

Whitehead and Tyson relate real stories of real people impacted by the Gospel to illustrate their points throughout chapters focused on: abundant life; dream; generosity; love; grace; freedom; commitment;
community; justice; and hope.  Well-written, thoughtful and thought-provoking, Rumors of God is sure to stimulate the reader in the desire for more than just the ordinary.  It will be useful and challenging for Christians of all walks of life, whether in professional ministry or not.  If you’re a pastor, be sure to read and devour this book.  If you’re not a pastor, share a copy of this book with your pastors and other leaders.  If you take their message to heart and allow it to stimulate your passion, life and ministry will never be the same.  I know that it has
challenged me, and I will surely refer to it again and again in ministry.

Blessings,

David
